Coldiron Wins the Mtn Hardwear Randonnee Rally
Scott Coldiron of Spokane, Washington won the Men’s Racing Division in the second annual Mountain Hardwear Ski Mountaineering race held on Sunday Feb 4th at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush ski resorts in Vermont. The Mountain Hardwear race was the second stop of the Life-Link Randonnee Rally Race Series. Coldiron barely edged Dave Lamb of Jackson, New Hampshire by 3 seconds in a time of 2 hours 3 minutes and 53 seconds. Lamb was the 2006 winner of this race. Coming in third in a time 2 hours 17 minutes and 42 seconds was PJ Telep of Waitsfield, VT.
The Women’s Racing Division was won by Emily Johns of Moretown, VT in a time of 2 hours 37 minutes and 25 seconds. Coming in second for the second year in a row was Katy Meyer of Burlington, VT in a time of 3 hours 16 minutes and 57 seconds. Third place was taken by Mollie Moriar of Waitsfield, VT in a time of 4 hours 15 minutes and 19 seconds
All of the racing division competitors garnered points toward the overall Series Title that will be decided in the final Race of the season in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “ It was a great race under great conditions with double the turnout that we had for last years race”, stated John Scott Executive Director of the United States Ski Mountaineering Association (USSMA) which is the sanctioning body for the race series.
“Both Mad River Glen and Sugarbush did a superb job on the course. They worked seamlessly together making the course which started at Mad River Glen and ended at Sugarbush both interesting and exciting for the competitors,” said Scott
The 2007 series now goes to Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Crested Butte, Colorado for the next race on February 10th. The Series then travels to Kirkwood, California for the Marmot Kirkwood Mountain Resort race on March 3rd. Alpental, Washington and the Outdoor Research Alpental Race is next on March 18th. This race will be organized by Martin Volken, well know mountain guide and retailer in the Seattle area. The Race Series finishes up with the Life-Link North American Championships at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on March 24th
Points are given to the race division competitors at each race that leads to the crowning of the overall Race Series champion in Jackson Hole. This year, as last year, points can also be earned by competing in the Black Diamond Powder Keg held in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 17th. Money from the races goes to benefit the local avalanche forecast centers or the search and rescue organization in the local communities where the races are held.
