Last weekend, three men perished in an avalanche in the Chartreuse Mountains near Grenoble, France. Sources say all three Frenchmen were experienced backcountry skiers and carried appropriate avalanche gear. Two were wearing airbag backpacks. Rescuers quickly arrived on scene and located the victims, only to pronounce all three men dead.

Following heavy snowfall, warming and rain elevated avalanche danger in the Isere region of the French Prealps where the accident occurred. Currently, however, the danger, as posted by Val d'Isere remains moderate.

With the accident, France has now seen six avalanche fatalities this winter. The U.S. has seen three.
