Test Setup
Eight testers, ranging in experience from two avy pros (an educator and a guide) to an eight-year-old, tested each beacon. One tester has owned and used beacons for more than 30 years, starting with a Skadi. The remaining four are typical backcountry skiers with two to 20 years of beacon practice.
Testers ran through single- and multiple-burial scenarios, and with approximately 150 scenarios, testing time totaled nearly 25 hours. Each tester performed their searches independently, without other testers present. Because of limited snow during testing, searchers held the beacons above waist height while pinpointing to simulate a deeper burial depth. Beacon separation for the three-beacon multiples ranged from 1.5 to 4 meters, with most separated by two or three meters.
