Break It Down
Six of eight testers selected the updated Mammut Pulse as their top pick, making it the 2012 Editors’ Choice. But the competition was close. One avy professional made the Pieps DSP his top pick for its smooth directions, fast pinpoint and marking performance; and the newest beacon-user felt most comfortable with the intuitive, straightforward display of the Ortovox 3+. The BCA Tracker2 garnered rave reviews for its single-burial prowess, but testers were disappointed by its multiple-burial performance. Two new beacons were not available in time for testing: the Ortovox S1+ ($450), which includes the single-battery power source and Smart Antenna of the 3+, and the GPS-enhanced Pieps Vector ($600), which might turn beacon technology on its head. Stay tuned for further reviews.
