Backcountry's October issue is the Deep Issue. In this month's magazine we examine five parts of a powder day, go deep into skiers' heads for the psychology of snow, and ponder deep ecology with author Leslie Anthony. With all this talk of depth, we at Backcountry started wondering about other forms of deep and the word itself. Deep water. Deep caves. Deep space. After a few Google searches we were amazed at the many depth records in the world. So relax, lean back, and enjoy our Top 50 Deep list!
1 Deepest dive by a bird. In Antarctica's Ross Sea, a 63-pound Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes Foresti) dove 1,751 feet below sea level.

2 Deepest point on earth. Marianas Trench at 10,994 km (6.856 miles).
3 Deepest lake in the world. Lake Baikal in southern Russia is 5,387 feet deep.
4 Deepest Huck. David Wiggins, Jr. holds the world record for the longest toss of a regulation Frisbee at 255m.
5 Deepest snowfall ever recorded. 1,140 inches, on Mount Baker, WA in 1999.

7 Tree with deepest roots. A wild fig tree at Echo Caves, in South Africa has roots that reach 400 feet beneath the ground.
8 Deepest free dive (SCUBA). Nuno Gomes reached 1044 below sea level feet in 2005.
9 Deepest skin dive (One Deep Breath). 702.1 feet by Herbert Nitsch in 2007, Nitsch was named the "deepest man on earth" following his record-breaking dive.
10 Deepest space exploration. Voyager 1 is now over 17.9 billion k.m. from earth.

12 Deepest sinkhole. China's Xiaozhai Tiankang sinkhole is 662m deep.
13 Deepest submarine dive. James Cameron dove his submarine 6.8 miles into the Marianas Trench.
14 Deepest cave. The Krubera Cave in the Gagra District of Abkhazia descends roughly 7,188 feet. (This cave is located near the Deep Issue's Georgia and Elbrus articles.)
15 Deepest hole ever drilled. The Kola Superdeep Borehole reached 40,230 feet in 1989.

16 Deepest recorded earthquake. A quake occurred 705 km beneath the Fiji Islands on May 6, 2007.
17 Deepest gold mine. The TauTona Mine in Carleton, South Africa reaches 2.4 miles under the surface of the earth. The farthest man has gone into the earth by land.
18 Deepest hand-dug well. The Woodingdean Well in Woodingdean, England is 1,285 feet deep.
19 Deepest indoor pool. Nemo 33 in Brussels, Belgium is 113 feet deep and holds 2.5 million liters of non-chlorinated water.
20 Deepest river in the world. The Congo River is over 755 feet deep in places.

21 Deepest tunnel. The Eiksund Tunnel is 287m feet beneath seal level and connects the Norwegian towns of Ørsta and Ulstein.
22 Deepest vocal note. Tim Storms can reach notes as low as G-7 (0.189 Hz). Eight octaves below the lowest G on a piano. Only large animals such as elephants can hear it.
23 Deepest recorded fish. Pseudoliparis amblystomopsis has been found 4.8 miles below sea level in the Japan Trench.
24 Deepest lake in the U.S. Crater Lake in Oregon is 2,148 feet deep.

25 Deepest stage of sleep. Stage 4 or delta stage.
26 Deepest reaching mountain. Mauna Kea in Hawaii, from its base on the ocean floor to its summit, stands 33,474 feet tall.
27 Deepest moon crater. The South Pole-Aitken basin is 1,500 miles across and more than 5 miles deep.
28 Depth to the center of the earth. From the surface of the earth to the center of the core is roughly 3,900 miles.
29 Deepest average snowfall. Paradise Station on Mt. Rainier averages 671 inches of snow a season.
30 Deepest discovered dinosaur fossil. The knucklebone of a plateosaur was found 1.4 miles beneath the north sea. The fossil is estimated to be 195-210 million years old.

31 Deepest living animal. Halicephalobus mephisto, also known as the devil worm, lives 2.2 miles beneath the earth's surface.
32 Deepest pockets. Chairman and CEO of Telmex, Carlos Slim Helu has a net worth of $69 billion.
33 Deepest nuclear test. Scientists in Siberia, Russia detonated a 2.5 kiloton nuclear device 9,350 feet below the earth in June, 1985.
34 Deepest shipwreck. Off the coast of Brazil, the German blockade runner, Rio Grande, may be found at 18,904 feet below sea level.

36 Deepest woodchuck den. Woodchuck burrows can be 5 feet deep and range from 8 to 66 feet in length.
37 Deepest diving marine mammal. Sperm whales can dive as deep as 9,80 feet.
38 Deepest ocean plant. Coralline algae can be found around 250 feet below sea level making it the deepest living-photosynthesizing organism.
39 Deepest bungee jump. The Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado offers a 1,053-foot bungee jump.
40 Deepest beard. Hans Nilsen Langseth, a Norwegian American, grew his beard to a length of seventeen feet and six inches.

42 Deepest breath. German free diver Tom Sietas held his breath for 22 minutes and 22 seconds on May 30, 2012.
43 Deepest jar of peanut butter available for purchase. 5 gallons.
44 Deepest beer vat. Built by the Meux Brewery in London in 1795, the wood and cast iron beer vat held 860,000 gallons of porter.

 Okay, maybe we were starting to run out of “deepests.” 46 Deepest open pit mine. The Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine outside of Salt Lake City is 0.75 miles deep.
47 Deepest afro. Aevin Dugas once grew an afro that was 4 feet and 4 inches in circumference.
48 Deepest jar of Nutella. The deepest container of Nutella on the market weighs 5 kilograms (11 pounds).
49 Deepest underwater concert. On October 10, 2006 Katie Melua and her band played 994 feet below sea level on St. Toil's Troll, a gas rig off the coast of Norway.
