Silverton, Colo. - Silverton Mountain has decided to open for additional mid-week ski days in December. With Purgatory going to a weekend only schedule (Friday through Sunday at DMR) for early December, Silverton Mountain has changed its operating schedule and will offer additional mid-week ski days for early season.
Silverton Mountain had previously only operated Saturdays and Sundays for the first two weekends of December before ramping up to the normal Thursday through Sunday schedule. Silverton Mountain runs Thursday through Sunday for the majority of the ski season. The Saturday-Sunday early season schedule at Silverton Mountain was due to lack of demand from hardcore skiers. Even though ski conditions have been spectacular in previous seasons from Thanksgiving on, it has been hard to create enough demand for the skiing at Silverton Mountain in early season.
However, now that Purgatory will be closed mid week, Silverton Mountain will open additional dates and go to a Wednesday through Sunday schedule for the first few weeks of December, or until DMR goes to a seven-day schedule. With most local skiers frequenting Purgatory, there are simply not enough skiers visiting Silverton Mountain mid week early season while DMR is also open mid week.
The closing of DMR presents a unique opportunity to provide additional early season mid-week ski days at Silverton Mountain this year. This will also be the first time in the 10-year history of Silverton Mountain that the ski area will be open on Wednesdays.
This latest storm dropped more than its share at Silverton Mountain and the ski area received 16-24" of new snow, adding to its existing base from October. If DMR stays closed mid week as projected (and only if), Silverton Mountain will move its opening day of the season up to Dec 2, 2009.
