24 Hours of Sunlight 2007
Feel the Burn ~ Enjoy the Ride ~ Repeat!
Teams and solos are already training for the Second Annual 24 Hours of
Sunlight an endurance race challenging teams of all ages and abilities to
hike up the mountain and ski, board, and/or snowshoe down, for an entire 24
hour period. This year the event takes place at Sunlight Mountain Resort one
week earlier, February 3-4, 2007, taking advantage of the full moon and a
new course over two runs. Last year's winners completed 32 laps or 50,100
vertical feet a new world record!
Lou Dawson, Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Famer, commented last
year, "Let me say again that this was one of the most positive and enjoyable
events I've ever been involved with. I encourage anyone to take a few days
off from backcountry skiing next winter and try getting your personal best
daily vertical … and socialize with a fine group of people." Lou's blog at
wildsnow.com is already chatting up this year's event.
Other racers shared the same enthusiasm. "There was a lot of excitement to
it," said Scott Fifer (one of 4 men all age 55 and older on the Men at Their
Peak team). "One skier would come in and you would help them get
something to eat and it just didn't work out to sleep. Everyone's adrenaline
was high and it was just a lot of fun." (GPI) And another, "It definitely
pushes you to the limit," Vosbeck said. "The people who were organizing it
were great and cheered you on through the night. It was a lot of fun." (GPI)
Teams that register in 2006 (before midnight on 12/31/06) not only get a $25
discount per person, each team member is automatically entered to win an
Alpine Touring Package (skis, boots, bindings, poles & skins) from UTE City
Cycles valued at over $2,000. Go to 24hoursofsunlight.com for more info &
registration.
"Our on-mountain team is excited to have the event come back they
worked on the course this summer," says Tom Jankovsky, Sunlight Mountain's
General Manager. "This proved to be a great way to showcase our mountain
to outdoor adventure enthusiasts and this year should be even bigger."
Mike Marolt, famed Everest skier and well known climber, came up with this
idea last year and it was such a success, he decided we should do it
again! "You don't have to be an extreme athlete or train all year," says
Marolt, "you just have to grab a bunch of your more adventurous friends and
go for it! There were couples, singles, old and young. Everyone had a great
time."
